FAQ's
Intermittent pneumatic compression mimics the body’s manual lymphatic drainage. By applying pressure to the surface of the limb it promotes the circulation of blood/fluid throughout the body. In the classic mode, each chamber inflates and deflates sequentially starting from the extremity and moving towards the centre of the body.
SIPC provides best results when used in conjunction with compression stockings (SIPC removes oedema fluid and compression stockings prevent re-accumulation).
Intermittent pneumatic compression is NOT RECOMMENDED in the following cases, speak to your treating clinician if you have concerns:
- Untreated non-pitting chronic lymphoedema
- Thrombophlebitis
- During an acute flare up or infection of the skin, eg cellulitis/erysipelas
- Uncontrolled/severe cardiac failure
- Pulmonary oedema
- Ischaemic vascular disease
- Active metastatic disease affecting oedematous region
- Oedema at the root of the affected limb or truncal oedema
- Severe peripheral neuropathy
